PS Vita launches in North America & Europe...

Feb 22 2012 11:10 AM | Smokey in Sony

That's right folks, the long wait is finally over. Sony released their next generation handheld - The PS Vita today in North America and Europe. Some gamers adopted the First Edition Bundle and were able to get their hands on the Vita last week. The PS Vita is the next generation of portable gaming by Sony Computer Entertainment and the true successor to the PSP. The Vita launched in Japan last year on December 17th and hasn't been doing so well but that is nothing to worry about, and Sony isn't worried it seems. The PSP sold horribly here in the states and sells like hotcakes in Japan, however the Vita isn't selling too well in Japan but could possibly sell like hotcakes here in the US and Europe? Well one thing that hurts the Vita is it's steep price point. The Wifi only model will run you $249.99 while the Wifi+3G model will run you $299.99. One thing that helps the Vita is that Sony is more serious about it this time then they were with the PSP and to show that, there is quite a huge lineup of first party and third party titles to accompany the new console today. To make things sweeter, both Target and GameStop are having a sale on PS Vita titles. Buy 2 get 1 free. Although it appears GameStop is only offering this for first party titles while Target seems to be open for all Vita titles.

So what do you think of the Vita? Are you picking one up today? Mine is on it's way here and I've already gotten my 32GB memory card and first game. I plan on heading over to Target in about 2 hours when they open to stock up on all the launch titles.

Sony abandons PlayStation Vita UMD Passport pla...

Feb 09 2012 06:59 PM | Skyon Archer in Sony

With the launch of the PlayStation Vita coming up in the next two weeks, Sony has a disappointing announcement for PSP owners planning to upgrade to the Vita.

Posted Image

As reported by Kotaku earlier today, Sony is ditching plans to allow new Vita owners to download PSP titles that they currently own on UMD disc. Sony rolled out this program in Japan at launch during December 2011 and all Japanese owners can register their UMD titles on the Vita by paying a fee based on the value of the game, thus Japanese owners can avoid having to repurchase the titles at full cost on the PlayStation Vita digital download store. New PlayStation Vita owners in North America on February 22 will have to keep the PSP in order to access old titles or repurchase older games at full price to utilize the software on the newer handheld system.

David Jaffe leaves Eat Sleep Play.

Feb 08 2012 04:00 AM | Smokey in Sony

Jaffe has posted on his twitter confirming a rumour that he has left the company he co-founded, Eat Sleep Play. The company who is responsible for some classics like calling all cars and more notable, Twisted Metal. The company has laid off some 27 employees and Jaffe has left in order to "work closer to home and make more casual games.". Jaffe is now looking for game developers to help him start up a new game developing company for more 'casual' games.

A direct quote from JoyStiq:

Eat Sleep Play, which will shortly ship Twisted Metal, has reportedly laid off eight employees. The Salt Lake City Tribune also reports that co-founder David Jaffe is also out and is expected to pursue "casual games." Jaffe responded to the "rumor" of him making casual games after Twisted Metal as "highly exaggerated."

Eat Sleep Play now has a staff of 26 and will transition to iPhone and iPad development. "It's a platform that is in our pockets almost 24/7. It's kind of the size and types of games we're playing," said other co-founder Scott Campbell to the Salt Lake Trib. "You can certainly reach a lot more people. That's pretty exciting for us."

Campbell confirmed Jaffe's departure and said that the company and Jaffe are "going down two separate paths." Twisted Metal is Eat Sleep Play's second project, following the dissapointing reception and sales of Calling all Cars. We've contacted Jaffe for clarification of his current status.

This is also from Jaffe's twitter clarifying the rumours:

But if I may clear this up: I was not laid off. I co-own the company. There were a few lay offs and they were very painful to do for all involved. I'm leaving because- again- games are just getting2big to direct from 300 miles away&I miss the day2day of working direct w/team. about some big, huge next gen game ideas I'd love for us2make, as well as cool stuff in the browser space (action oriented, gamer centric)& a few things in between. Once DICE wraps& game launches, it's company building time!Any game devs that want to chat joining a new SD action game co, please gimme a shout! Talk soon! Posted Image

So what do you think? Do you think this is the end for Twisted Metal? Are you still going to be picking up the game next Tuesday? Let us know your thoughts on this in the comments below!

GameStop now offering Vita demo units in their...

Feb 04 2012 03:21 AM | Smokey in Sony

Through a press release, GameStop has confirmed they now have demo units of the upcoming PS Vita in over 33,000 stores. So head over to your local gamestop and see if they got one for you to try out! I'll probably be doing just that sometime this weekend. The PS Vita launches for special pre-orders on February 15th and the rest of the US and Europe on February 22nd. Now that you can try out the Vita for yourself. Do you think more people will buy one if they like what they see? Or do you feel the price is still a huge factor that may hurt Vita sales? Are you someone like me who is getting one regardless of the price tag? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Sony confirms Hirai as new Sony CEO.

Feb 01 2012 04:49 PM | Smokey in Sony

Sony has confirmed that Kaz Hirai is indeed the new CEO of Sony. Congrats to Mr. Hirai on becoming the proper successor to outgoing CEO, Howard Stinger. The past few months Sony had been denying any talk or rumours of Hirai taking over the CEO position but they have just recently released a statement stating it is indeed true. The company released a statement saying that Hirai would be taking over as of April 1st. In the statement, Hirai thanked his predecessor, Sir Howard Stringer, for his service and vision, stating that were it not for his "strong leadership" Sony "would have been in a much more difficult position."

So congrats to Mr. Hirai on becoming the new Sony C.E.O!

Look how happy he looks!

PS Vita games will be cheaper to purchase digit...

Feb 01 2012 05:53 AM | Smokey in Sony

Yes you read that headline correctly. It appears a sony rep has confirmed that PS Vita titles will be cheaper to purchase through PSN then the phsyical copy of the game. This was found out after someone was able to take a sneaky but well executed photo of a best buy computer monitor the picture is below:

Posted Image

Sony has since confirmed that PS Vita digital copies of games from PSN will indeed have a discount and they will be 10% cheaper then purchasing a Vita game in retail. Could this be to phase out physical media over time? Who knows. With this discount, do you see yourself purchasing more Vita games digitally or do you still want to shell out the extra bucks for the physical copy? :)

Syphon Filter 4 rumored to be announced next mo...

Jan 23 2012 10:39 PM | Smokey in Sony

Our sources have told us that Sony is planning on announcing the long-awaited and long rumored title, Syphon Filter 4 next month. Syphon Filter 4 would be the 7th title in the series but the 4th numbered/canon title and the first to debut on the Playstation 3. After a few side games for the Playstation 2 and PSP consoles, Gabe Logan hasn't retired just yet, and I for one would love to see this rumor to be proven true. We can expect that if this is announced next month sometime that an inevitable reveal of the game itself will be awaiting us at E3 this summer. What are your thoughts on this? Are you a Syphon Filter fan? Would you like to see a new SF title on a current gen console? Let us know in the comments below.

GTA 3 and Vice City receive PS3 Ratings

Jan 23 2012 02:52 PM | Smokey in Sony

According to one source, classic PS2 titles Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City have received PS3 ratings. However, this is to be taken with a grain of salt since there has been no official word yet from Rockstar regarding this. One is to assume this is just rumour and speculation, however if it is true that is fantastic news. The question to bare in mind now is will these games be getting the HD collection treatment or the PS2 classics treatment like BloodRayne and others?.
The difference? Well PS2 classics on the PSN store don't have trophy support and aren't in HD so they don't look as nice. For games this big, one would hope Rockstar would put them in an HD Collection instead of releasing a non-HD version via PSN. It'd be kinda insulting if the iPad version of the game looked better then it's PS3 counterpart. We will keep you posted as soon as we hear anything more regarding the release of Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City for the PS3. It's likely that it will happen, it's just a matter of when.

PSN down for maintenance today (1/19/12)

Jan 19 2012 02:37 PM | Smokey in Sony

The Playstation Network (PSN) will be down today, January 19th, 2012 for maintenance on the service. Sony has released word that the Playstation Network will be down today for at least 12 hours for scheduled maintenance on the network. One would assume this is to perhaps make way for some Vita related stuff and possibly further beef up security? A quote from a Sony rep is as follows:

Quote

The PlayStation Network will undergo routine maintenance later today (January 19).

Sony has confirmed that the network will go down between around 4pm and 5pm GMT (8am and 9am PST).

It will then resume service at 5am GMT on January 20 (9pm PST on January 19), lasting a total of 12 hours.

Users will not be able to access the PlayStation Store, account functions including management and registration, PlayStation Home or the network's Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services during the maintenance period.

"Users who are already signed into their account on PlayStation Network before the start of the maintenance should be able to stay signed in to their online session, but will not be able to access any of the services [taken offline]," said communications chief Patrick Seybold.

"Users who attempt to sign in to their PlayStation Network account after the start of the maintenance may be presented with the site maintenance notification page if they haven't signed in recently."

The PlayStation Network has undergone frequent closures for routine maintenance since last April's hacking scandal.

Former US homeland security chief Philip Reitinger joined the company last year as a senior executive, and was given responsibility for global information security and privacy.

Personally, the downtime doesn't bother me much. Anything that will help improve the service is good and very welcome. My PS3s can't be re-activated until Saturday anyway so it doesn't affect me all that much. I'm all for enhancing the network and fixing any problems that it may have so the 'downtime' isn't an issue for me. I'd rather see the network be more stable and with more functionality to it then complain about not being able to game for 12 hours. What are your thoughts? Are you affected by this 'outage'? Let us know in the comments below.

Kaz Hirai denies PS4 presence at E3 2012.

Jan 11 2012 06:59 PM | Smokey in Sony

Kaz Hirai has denied any rumours that the PS4 will be making any sort of appearance at this year's E3. I've just had this bit of news tweeted to me by the folks over at TechnoBuffalo. So if this is indeed true, what do you think of it? Do you think Kaz may just be denying it so we don't expect it and then BAM we get hit with an announcement or revealing anyway? When Hirai was asked if there would be a PS4 announcement at E3 he responded with “Andy (House) is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3…” He later followed up with his quote regarding the PS3's 10 year plan with the following quote: “I’ve always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that.”.

Personally, I think the PS3 still has a ton of life left in it and I've said this on other forums and sites across the net that it'd be incredibly foolish of Sony to reveal a new home console the same year they launch a new handheld (The vita). It'd just be a very unwise business move on their part. I wouldn't expect to see an announcement for the PS4 until maybe next year's E3. Even then, that would just be an announcement or unveiling of it. It wouldn't be released next year. What are your thoughts? Are you disappointed we won't be hearing about a new sony console at this year's E3?

Let us know your thoughts and sound off in the comments below!
