Moooortal Kombat!! is what fans were screaming this past Tuesday when Mortal Kombat released on PS3 and Xbox 360. I received my copy of Mortal Kombat (for PS3) on Tuesday afternoon and been playing it since. I've stopped playing to bring you a review of the game. Mortal Kombat is a reboot of the series and about time. Although it's the 9th title in the 20 year old series it's just titled "Mortal Kombat" and rightfully so as the game has gone back to it's roots. 3D graphics but with 2D style gameplay you find on older consoles such as the Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo. Basically, Mortal Kombat goes back to ti's glory days.

The game features characters from games 1 through 4 and some new characters as well, or rather, variation of older characters. I won't spoil anything for you but there's one particular character that has 2 alterations of himself. I won't say which one that is though. Each character has alternate costumes you can unlock and if you were lucky to get certain DLC depending on where you pre-ordered your game. You could've gotten classic MK costumes for specific characters. I got Klassic Reptile because I pre-ordered my game with Amazon. As far as I know you can also get: Klassic Scorpion (GameStop), Klassic Sub Zero, Klassic Jade, Klassic Millena, Klassic Kitana. Not sure who else is available as a "Klassic" character though.
The storyline in Mortal Kombat is pretty good. It's a mix of the story of MK1 and MK2. You basically have to defeat all of the major bosses in MK on your way to the top. Shao Kahn is the main villain in this game. You'll also notice the levels are very very familiar from the old games. The levels from Mortal Kombat 1, 2 and 3 were re-done in full 3D and look absolutely stunning.

There's other great unlockables in the new Mortal Kombat. As usual, there's trophies you can obtain by completing certain tasks. There's a few game modes that returned as well as well as mini games. You get the classic "Ladder". Tag Ladder which allows you to use a tag team duo, think of Marvel vs Capcom type gameplay but Mortal Kombatized, which is really fun if you wanna pull off some deadly tag team combos against your friends. Other modes that returned are Test your Might. Which some of you may remember from the first Mortal Kombat from 1991. It wasn't present in later games however. It's back now and a lot of nostalgic fun. When you go into the Krypt you can unlock various things like concept art, fatalities for the characters, alternate costumes and more. You purchase items in the krypt with MK Coins which you earn by playing the storyline or doing the ladder. Each character has their own ending when playing the ladder and there's a separate ending for the storyline.

Mortal Kombat is a lot of fun and a real blast from the past for long time fans. One would argue it's one of the best games in the series. The controls are great, the graphics are terrific and the voice acting is superb. I haven't really touched the online much due to PSN having problems and being down for days but I was able to get a few matches in on launch day and it's quite impressive how it's set up. You can fight others or spectate other's matches and give respect points during spectating another fighter's match online, very neat feature to have in the game. There's a lot to do in the new Mortal Kombat and unlocking everything in the krypt will take you some time so there's plenty of 'replay value' for Mortal Kombat. One of the best games of 2011 so far.
